Protesters in Paris have called for an end to violence against women ahead of a UN-designated day for that cause. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is marked every year on November 25. Protesters, mainly women, hoisted purple placards -- the color symbolizing the movement -- as they marched in the French capital on Saturday. The organizer says 80,000 people took part. French government statistics show that in 2023, 93 women were killed by their partners. A series of sex crimes, including a case in which a husband drugged his wife and gathered men to rape her, have triggered public anger. One of the protesters said she is fighting not just for herself, but for future generations of women. She said the world should speak up. A man who joined the demonstration with his female friend says men are trying to change and that it is important to show their support for women.
