New figures show Chinese exports to the US jumped in March as companies rushed out shipments before President Donald Trump's latest tariffs took effect. Chinese customs authorities say exports rose 9 percent from a year earlier in dollar terms. Washington doubled its additional tariffs on Chinese goods in March to 20 percent, but exporters anticipated that that figure would rise dramatically in April. The value of imports from the US fell 9.4 percent. The result was that China's trade surplus with the US jumped by 20.2 percent. America's imbalance with trading partners around the world has been a source of anger for Trump for decades. The total value of China's exports in March was up by more than 12.4 percent as shipments to Southeast Asia rose. Imports fell 4.3 percent. This month, the US raised its additional levies on imports from China to 145 percent. China hit back with extra duties of 125 percent on US goods. The trade conflict is clouding the outlook for China's economy.
