US President Joe Biden has blasted special counsel Robert Hur for saying that he has a poor memory. Hur decided earlier not to bring criminal charges against Biden over allegations that Biden mishandled classified documents when he was vice president. Classified documents regarding military and foreign policy in Afghanistan were discovered in 2022 and 2023 at Biden's home and private office. The report released by Hur said, "Mr Biden's memory was significantly limited" and "it would be difficult to convince a jury that they should convict him" of a felony that requires a mental state of willfulness. In a hastily arranged news conference at the White House on Thursday evening, Biden welcomed the decision. But he reacted angrily to a claim in the report that he had trouble recollecting the date of his son's death. He said, "I don't need anyone to remind me when he passed away." He also said, "My memory is fine." But during the same news conference, Biden called Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi the leader of Mexico. Biden has frequently mixed up the names and titles of people during speeches and news conferences. At an election campaign stop on Sunday, he mistakenly mentioned the late Francois Mitterrand in connection with an event in 2021, when Emmanuel Macron was actually the sitting French president. On Wednesday, Biden also mistakenly referred to a conversation in the past with then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel as having taken place with the late German Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Questions have been raised about Biden's health and age. He is currently seeking reelection in this year's presidential election, which will be held in November.
