Torrential rain forecast for Japan's Tokai and Kanto-Koshin regions NHK

Japanese weather officials say a seasonal rain front and a low-pressure system are likely to cause localized downpours in the Tokai and Kanto-Koshin regions on Friday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says the front has brought rain to wide areas from eastern and northeastern Japan.

Shinshiro City in Aichi Prefecture had 32 millimeters of rain in the one-hour period through 5 a.m.

A front with a low-pressure system near Tokai is expected to move eastward. Downpours accompanied by localized thunder are forecast for Tokai and Kanto-Koshin.

During the 24 hours through Saturday morning, the two regions are expected to receive up to 80 millimeters of rain.

Some areas along the Pacific coast were hit by record rainfall last weekend, and could be vulnerable to even relatively small amounts of further rainfall.

The meteorological agency is advising people to stay on alert for the possible landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and rising rivers. People are advised to check the latest evacuation information from their local governments.
