He loaded up the bases in the first inning, allowing two hits and a walk with no outs. But he pitched out of trouble by striking out three batters in a row with sharp breaking balls and fastballs.
He got out of another bases-loaded jam in the second inning by striking out Cubs star Cody Bellinger looking.
In all, Yamamoto had 80 pitches, three hits, two walks and eight strikeouts over five scoreless innings.
Ohtani Shohei belted two hits for the Dodgers.
The Cub's Suzuki Seiya failed to get a hit against Yamamoto. Suzuki's hitting streak ended at five games.
