Giant rice cakes have been presented to a shrine in central Japan in an offering for good health and an abundant harvest in the coming year.
Farmers and others in Aichi Prefecture deliver the massive mochi every year to the Atsuta Jingu shrine in Nagoya City.
The five cakes were made from sticky rice harvested in the prefecture and were offered on Saturday. One weighed about 400 kilograms, and the other four weighed about 70 kilograms each.
About 200 farmers clad in traditional white happi coats and wearing headbands carried the rice cakes placed on wooden stands to the shrine's worship hall.
A participant said he is honored to be involved in an event with a long history, and that he hopes the coming year will be peaceful and bring a good harvest.
The rice cakes will be broken into pieces and distributed to shrine visitors on January 10.
