Four animated works were the highest-grossing films in Japan last year, with a &quot;Slam Dunk&quot; at the top.
                
The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan on Tuesday announced the revenue from films screened in the country in 2023.
                
It said &quot;The First Slam Dunk&quot; raked in 15.87 billion yen, or about 108 million dollars. The film is based on the popular basketball manga &quot;Slam Dunk.&quot;
                
&quot;The Super Mario Bros. Movie&quot; came in second, at about 95 million dollars.
                
&quot;Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine&quot; finished third, at about 94 million dollars. It is the 26th Detective Conan movie.
                
In fourth position was &quot;The Boy and the Heron,&quot; director Miyazaki Hayao&#039;s first feature-length movie in 10 years. It earned about 60 million dollars.
                
The association also said overall revenue last year was about 221 billion yen, or roughly 1.5 billion dollars. That&#039;s up 3.9 percent from the previous year in yen terms.
