Four animated works were the highest-grossing films in Japan last year, with a "Slam Dunk" at the top. The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan on Tuesday announced the revenue from films screened in the country in 2023. It said "The First Slam Dunk" raked in 15.87 billion yen, or about 108 million dollars. The film is based on the popular basketball manga "Slam Dunk." "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" came in second, at about 95 million dollars. "Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine" finished third, at about 94 million dollars. It is the 26th Detective Conan movie. In fourth position was "The Boy and the Heron," director Miyazaki Hayao's first feature-length movie in 10 years. It earned about 60 million dollars. The association also said overall revenue last year was about 221 billion yen, or roughly 1.5 billion dollars. That's up 3.9 percent from the previous year in yen terms.
