Relief efforts for quake-hit Myanmar are making little headway, with life-saving essentials in short supply. Heavy rains and skirmishes between the ruling military and pro-democracy forces are worsening the situation. The magnitude-7.7 earthquake that rocked central Myanmar killed over 3,500 people. Hundreds more are unaccounted for 10 days after the jolt. Many people lost their homes and now must live outdoors in scorching heat of around 40 degrees Celsius during the day. Heavy rain pounded Mandalay over the weekend. Strong winds blew away emergency tents. The bad weather complicated the city's disaster response. Aid workers fear the spread of infectious diseases as the downpour caused sewage to overflow from drains. Meanwhile, fighting reportedly continues here and there between the military and pro-democracy forces, despite a ceasefire. A military spokesperson said Saturday some junta bases have come under attack. Pro-democratic forces say the military has been staging airstrikes. Both sides declared a temporary truce after the quake to allow humanitarian assistance to reach survivors. But delivering that aid is proving difficult.
