People in Wajima City who survived the earthquake that struck Ishikawa Prefecture on New Year's Day were treated to a seasonal delicacy on Sunday. Chirashi-zushi is a type of sushi. It is vinegared rice topped with fish and other ingredients. Three hundred servings were prepared for the traditional girls' festival. The event is held annually in Japan on March 3. A group of locals wanted to support the survivors and thank volunteers. So, they handed out boxes of chirashi-zushi and bowls of warm miso soup. Parents, children and other visitors enjoyed the tasty items. One survivor said: "I usually make chirashi-zushi every year, but I can't now. So, I'm grateful for this." Another stated, "The smiles of the children are energizing us." One organizer said he hopes the residents will be able to continue moving forward step by step.
