Diplomatic, defense chiefs of Japan, US to meet in Washington on Jan. 11 NHK

A US government spokesperson says the diplomatic and defense chiefs of Japan and the United States will meet in Washington next Wednesday.

The US State Department's Ned Price announced the "two-plus-two" talks at a news conference on Thursday.

He said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will meet with Japan's Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa and Defense Minister Hamada Yasukazu.

Price said the Japan-US alliance remains the cornerstone of a free and open Indo-Pacific region. He said the two nations will discuss their shared vision of a modernized alliance that will tackle 21st-century challenges in the region and around the world.

Blinken is planning to visit China early this year. The US government apparently aims to reaffirm cooperation with Japan ahead of that visit.
