Spain beat England to clinch first title NHK

In the Women's World Cup soccer, Spain beat England in the final in Sydney to win the championship for the first time.

Both teams were making their debut appearance in the finals. England took to the field as the European champion.

Spain opened the scoring in the 29th minute. Captain Olga Carmona burst into the England box and shot into the far corner.

In the 68th minute, Spain was awarded a penalty for a handball.

But Mary Earps jumped in the right direction and succeeded in stopping the ball.

England had some chances at the end of the match. Yet the Spanish defenders were determined to prevent them from scoring.

Spain won the final, one-nil. It's only the second country to have won World Cups for both men's and women's soccer.

Meanwhile, Japan's Miyazawa Hinata was the tournament's top scorer with five goals, including two against Spain in the group stage. Japan was knocked out in the quarterfinals.

Sawa Homare is the only other Japanese player to have picked up the Golden Boot. She was the captain when Japan won the Women's World Cup in 2011.
