More than 46,000 people are confirmed to have been killed in the powerful earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria earlier this month. The death tolls from the magnitude-7.8 quake on February 6 and the tremors that followed have reached 40,642 in Turkey and 5,814 in Syria. Rescuers continue to search for survivors. Reuters news agency and other media outlets say a couple was pulled alive from rubble in the hard-hit southern Turkish province of Hatay on Saturday, 296 hours after the quake. Their son was also found but was later confirmed dead. Rescuers say two other children were found dead.
