Vocal critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past have been killed or died under mysterious circumstances. They include Anna Politkovskaya, a commentator for Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, who was shot dead in her apartment building in Moscow in 2006. While the independent newspaper is critical of the Putin administration, Politkovskaya reported on the human rights abuses committed by Russian forces during the Chechnya war, such as kidnappings and torture of civilians. The perpetrators of the attack have been arrested, but the full extent of the incident remains unclear, including who gave the instructions to kill her. Also in 2006, Alexander Litvinenko, a former employee of the Russian Federal Security Service, or FSB, who had defected to Britain, died after complaining of ill health in London where he was in exile. He is believed to have been killed, as the highly toxic radioactive isotope called polonium was detected in his body. In 2015, Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov was shot dead in central Moscow. A group of men were convicted of killing him but the mastermind or the motive of the murder was never learned. More recently, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Russian private mercenary group Wagner, who led a mutiny against Russian military leaders last June, died after his private jet crashed two months later. The Putin administration maintains hand grenades went off on Prigozhin's jet. No details have been disclosed. The administration denies involvement in any of the cases, but the United States and others have criticized the deaths, saying the Russian government is behind the incidents.
