A Chinese warship crossed in front of a US destroyer in the Taiwan Strait on Saturday.
The US military has released a video showing an "unsafe maneuver" by the Chinese vessel that it says could have led to an unintended clash.
White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby spoke to reporters on Monday.
Kirby said, "It won't be long before somebody gets hurt." He added, "It wouldn't take much for an error in judgement or a mistake to get made."
He also called for the resumption of a US-China military line that was shut down in August.
Kirby later noted, "we are feeling like we are making progress in terms of opening up additional lines of communications."
