Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has spoken to NHK about his country's decision to deport four criminal suspects to Japan. The Japanese men are accused of orchestrating a string of robberies from an immigration facility in Metro Manila. Marcos spoke during an exclusive interview on Friday in Tokyo. He said Philippine authorities had no objection to the Japanese government's request to return the men, and sought to avoid a long process. Marcos added that he thinks the wishes of both countries have been satisfied. The Philippine leader also spoke about China's maritime advances in the South China Sea. Marcos said the Philippines must do everything to defend its sovereignty, but does not think a military solution is viable. He stressed the need for continued restraint in the South China Sea, adding that the Philippines wants to maintain peace and dial down the increasing tensions.
