The operator of the Takahama nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast says it plans to restart one of its reactors as early as late July.
                
Kansai Electric Power Company informed the prefectural authority on Wednesday that it has completed a series of construction work on the plant&#039;s No.1 reactor and received approval from the Nuclear Regulation Authority.
                
The utility said it will start loading nuclear fuel into the reactor on Thursday, and hopes to reactivate it on July 28.
                
The company was initially scheduled to put the reactor into operation this month, but indicated the work would be delayed because the nuclear regulators pointed out fire prevention measures were inadequate.
                
The No.1 unit would be the second reactor that is more than 40 years old to be put back online in Japan.
                
The No.1 reactor, which began operation in 1974, is the country&#039;s oldest remaining nuclear reactor that is operable.
                
The reactor has been offline since January 2011, when it ceased operation for a regular inspection.
                
The company says it plans to restart the plant&#039;s No.2 unit on September 15. The reactor is also more than 40 years old.
