CIA chief to travel to Egypt for talks on Gaza hostage deal NHK

US news website Axios reports that President Joe Biden is sending Central Intelligence Agency Director Bill Burns to Egypt next Tuesday to discuss a new deal to secure the release of the remaining Israeli hostages in Gaza.

Negotiations between Israel and Hamas are under way, with Egypt and Qatar mediating.

But Israel has rejected a proposal by Hamas for a permanent ceasefire.

The situation remains unclear as the two sides remain far apart in their aims.

Burns visited Europe in late January for talks with representatives of Israel, Qatar and Egypt.
