The policy chief of Japan's main ruling Liberal Democratic Party has promised Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen greater efforts toward further cooperation and exchanges. LDP Policy Research Council Chairperson Hagiuda Koichi arrived in Taiwan on Monday. On Wednesday, he met Tsai at the presidential office in Taipei. Tsai noted that Japan has repeatedly urged the international community to be mindful of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. She expressed hope that Japan and Taiwan will continue to cooperate as strong partners and contribute to peace and prosperity, as they face authoritarianism and other challenges in the region. Hagiuda spoke about a lecture he gave earlier in the day at a university in the southern city of Kaohsiung. He told Tsai he was surprised to find the students so interested in Japan, and that he will continue to push for exchanges among young people who represent the future of Japan and Taiwan. Hagiuda described Taiwan as a crucial partner and a treasured friend, with shared basic values, close economic ties and human exchanges. He said the LDP will step up efforts to deepen those ties.
