Japan's government is looking at seeking a court order to disband the group widely known as the Unification Church as a religious corporation. Some officials suggest a dissolution order should be requested by the end of next month.

Culture ministry officials are examining the organization's alleged dubious marketing practices and solicitations of large donations from its followers.

They have exercised their legal authority to inquire into the religious organization on seven occasions. The officials have also interviewed lawyers who have been negotiating with the group as well as former followers.

Some government officials suggest a dissolution order should be requested by the end of October. Others point to the need to carefully examine whether such a request will meet legal requirements as the Constitution guarantees the freedom of religion.

The Religious Corporations Act stipulates that a religious group can immediately appeal a court order for it to disband.

Officials are also considering seeking a court order to fine the group for not appropriately responding to its inquiries.
