Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected calls for a ceasefire. More than 1,400 people in his country and at least 8,300 in the Gaza Strip have been killed since the latest conflict with Hamas began.
                
Israeli forces have been bombarding Gaza in retaliation for the Hamas strike earlier this month. They have sent infantry, tanks and armored units across the border. The forces claim to have killed dozens of Hamas militants in the operation.
                
Netanyahu said, &quot;Calls for a ceasefire are calls for Israel to surrender to Hamas, to surrender to terrorism, to surrender to barbarism. That will not happen.&quot;
                
He said being on the ground is the best hope of recovering the more than 200 hostages taken by Hamas.
                
Footage released by Hamas shows three hostages accusing him of failing to protect Israelis. One of them demands a ceasefire from Israel and the release of Palestinian prisoners.
                
The Israeli military announced that it had rescued one soldier who was being held by Hamas.
