A senior official of South Korea's presidential office says the country's upcoming summit with Japan signals that the bilateral relationship has truly entered a stage of normalization.

National Security Adviser Kim Sung-han told reporters on Tuesday that President Yoon Suk-yeol will make a two-day visit to Japan from Thursday.

Kim said Yoon will meet Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio on Thursday afternoon. He suggested that the two are expected to discuss ways to normalize bilateral relations, including implementation of Seoul's solution to the wartime labor issue.

Last week, South Korea announced a plan to have a government-backed fund supported by donations from domestic companies compensate people who say they or their relatives were forced to work for Japanese firms during World War Two.

Kim said resuming summits between the two nations' leaders after a 12-year suspension marks an important milestone in improving bilateral ties.

On his second day in Japan, Yoon plans to attend a meeting of the two countries' business leaders, and speak at an event attended by university students from both sides.
