Following the invasion of Ukraine, airlines in Europe, the US and other countries suspended direct flights to Russia. Thailand also halted direct flights, but resumed them in October last year. The extension of the visa-free period is seen as an attempt to attract more Russians seeking to escape their country's cold winter.

Thailand recently waived visa requirements for tourists from China and Kazakhstan until February. They can now stay visa-free for up to 30 days.

The tourism-reliant nation saw about 40 million arrivals a year before the pandemic. But the recovery from the downturn has been slow. Recently inaugurated Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has vowed to support Thailand's tourism industry.
