Thailand has been a popular tourist destination for Russians even after the invasion of Ukraine. The Thai government has decided to extend the visa-free period for Russian visitors to boost tourism. The extension will last six months from November 1 to April 30 next year. Russian tourists will be allowed to stay for 90 days, up from the current 30 days. Following the invasion of Ukraine, airlines in Europe, the US and other countries suspended direct flights to Russia. Thailand also halted direct flights, but resumed them in October last year. The extension of the visa-free period is seen as an attempt to attract more Russians seeking to escape their country's cold winter. Thailand recently waived visa requirements for tourists from China and Kazakhstan until February. They can now stay visa-free for up to 30 days. The tourism-reliant nation saw about 40 million arrivals a year before the pandemic. But the recovery from the downturn has been slow. Recently inaugurated Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has vowed to support Thailand's tourism industry.
