Russian missile strikes apartment in eastern Ukraine, kills 3 NHK

A Russian missile has struck an apartment building in eastern Ukraine, causing multiple casualties and prompting condemnation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Heavy fighting has been continuing in eastern Ukraine. Police officials in the Donetsk region say an apartment building in the Ukrainian stronghold of Kramatorsk was hit by a Russian Iskander short-range ballistic missile shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday.

They say three people were killed and 20 were injured in the attack.

A desperate search is underway for people who may be trapped under the rubble.

Zelenskyy posted a statement on social media. He said, "This is not a replay of the past." He added this is the daily reality of his country.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will deliver a speech at a ceremony in the southern Russian city of Volgograd on Thursday. The event is being held to mark the 80th anniversary of Russia's victory over Nazi Germany there.

It remains to be seen how Putin will address the issue of his country's invasion of Ukraine during the speech.
