Japanese weather officials say Typhoon Haikui is moving west over waters south of Ishigaki Island in the southwestern prefecture of Okinawa, and is likely to approach the Sakishima Islands through Sunday. Winds of up to 82.8 kilometers per hour and gusts of 126 kilometers per hour are expected on the islands. Up to 54 kilometer-per-hour winds and gusts of 90 kilometers per hour are likely in Okinawa's main island area through Sunday. The Meteorological Agency says up to 100 millimeters of rain may fall on the Sakishima Islands in the 24 hours until Sunday evening, and between 100 and 150 millimeters in the 24 hours until Monday evening. The officials warn of high waves. Caution is advised against strong winds, landslides, flooding of low-lying areas and swollen rivers. Storm surges could also trigger flooding in Okinawa Prefecture through Sunday, as the typhoon's approach coincides with spring tide. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Kirogi is moving northwest over waters off the Ogasawara Islands, far south of central Tokyo, and is expected to come closest to the islands through early Sunday. Weather officials are advising caution against strong winds, rough waves, lightning strikes and sudden heavy rain.
