US President Joe Biden and other world leaders have weighed in on the fighting between the Israelis and Palestinians. Biden said Americans will make sure Israel has what it needs. On Tuesday, the US president spoke again with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to pledge his support. He later delivered a statement saying that Hamas fighters "slaughtered" more than 1,000 people, including at least 14 Americans. He added that they unleashed "pure unadulterated evil." Biden said, "The United States has Israel's back. We'll make sure that the Jewish and democratic state of Israel can defend itself today, tomorrow, as we always have." Biden added that his administration will provide additional military assistance, as well as intelligence to help save hostages. He will also send Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who is expected to arrive in Israel on Thursday. European Union officials say the Israelis have the right to defend themselves but need to respect global norms. On Tuesday, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell cutting water, electricity and food to civilians, for example, goes against international law. Japanese officials are warning people on both sides of the conflict against any escalation. Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko said, "We will make every diplomatic effort to calm the situation as soon as possible, including meetings with parties in the Middle East." Kamikawa spoke with the foreign minister of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as part of those efforts.
