Thai same-sex couples register marriages with joy, relief NHK

Thailand's law recognizing marriage between same-sex partners came into effect on Thursday.

Thailand is the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex unions. All kinds of events took place across the country to celebrate the momentous occasion.

Scores of couples thronged a prominent Bangkok shopping mall to register their marriage. They are now guaranteed the same rights as those in heterosexual unions, including tax benefits, inheritance, and adoption.

The Bangkok government has set up special booths for marriage registrations. About 300 LGBTQ couples are expected to tie the knot at this venue throughout Thursday.

Among the newlyweds are Prattana Sreemod and Thanawan Deeprasertkul. They've been together for over 12 years.

For them, it's painfully clear how important it is to have partnerships legally recognized. In 2014, they were in a car accident and Prattana was taken to intensive care. But with no legal status for their partnership, Thanawan couldn't sign for the surgery. It was past midnight, and Thanawan had to wait for hours until Prattana's brother came to give consent.

Thanawan says, "I felt scared that she wasn't going to be with me anymore. The treatment was urgently needed, but I couldn't do anything."

On the long-awaited day, Prattana said, "It's like we're united as one now. After this, in every aspect of our lives we can be fully involved without any concerns. Our life together as couple has come to a fulfilled state."

Thai society has a reputation for being open to gender diversity, with a vibrant LGBTQ culture. While rights campaigners warn there is still more work ahead to overcome discrimination, Thailand is embarking on a new journey to live up to its reputation as an LGBTQ friendly nation.
