Prabowo says he's headed for victory in Indonesia's presidential election NHK

Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto has claimed he is on track to win Wednesday's presidential election.

Prabowo spoke at a rally in the capital, Jakarta, on Wednesday night. He was accompanied by his running mate for vice president, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who is the eldest son of incumbent President Joko Widodo. Prabowo describes himself as Joko's successor.

The other two candidates in the presidential election are former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan and former Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo.

Unofficial counts surveying some vote-counting stations give Prabowo over 55 percent -- a majority that would make a runoff unnecessary.

Prabowo said at the rally that all preliminary figures indicate his victory, which will be "a victory for all Indonesians."

But he added that he must wait for the announcement by the election commission. It will take about a month for the official results to be released.

Whether to continue Joko's policies or change them was the main issue in the campaign. Prabowo attracted support by stressing he will keep Joko's main policies, including the relocation of the capital.
