Myanmar's military junta has denied access to humanitarian workers trying to reach victims of last month's deadly Cyclone Mocha. The cyclone made landfall in the country on May 14. Violent winds and high waves caused massive damage, mainly in western regions. The pro-democracy National Unity Government says more than 450 people have been confirmed dead. The UN says 1.6 million more were affected by the disaster, and has been offering food, tents and other humanitarian aid. But authorities in hard-hit Rakhine state announced last Thursday they were suspending access for staff from international organizations, without giving any reason. A UN resident coordinator said on Monday that the decision is "unfathomable" with the monsoon season underway. He said the move will unnecessarily prolong people's suffering and increase the risk of food insecurity and water-borne diseases. Myanmar's junta has maintained tight restrictions on access to Rakhine state. It's home to many Rohingya Muslims, who have been targeted in military crackdowns.
