US Jewish group hears Trump, potential rivals, speak NHK

Former US President Donald Trump and other potential Republican candidates in the 2024 presidential election took part in the Republican Jewish Coalition's Annual Leadership Meeting in Las Vegas.

Trump said via live stream that the country is facing serious problems. He said, "Our country is in grave grave trouble. We have to take the fight straight to Joe Biden and his radical and incompetent administration. We have to take back the White House in 2024." He announced his candidacy on Tuesday and called for support at the meeting in Las Vegas.

Some state governors and former Trump administration appointees seen as possible 2024 candidates also spoke at the two-day meeting that ended on Saturday.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, whose hardline and conservative policies have won favor among Republicans and set him up as Trump's potential rival, said he won this month's gubernatorial election partly by attracting non-Republican votes.

He said, "There is a lot that has gone wrong in our country particularly over the last two years. We've accomplished more over a four-year period than anybody thought possible." and "I have only begun to fight."

Former Vice President Mike Pence who hinted at running in the next presidential election, while distancing himself from Trump, said, "We as Republicans and elected leaders must do more than criticize and complain. We must unite our party."

Although Trump is the only one who has announced his candidacy, US media reported that many of his potential rivals spoke at the meeting.
