Taiwan's president-elect Lai Ching-te has sought continued US support for Taiwan to bolster its self-defense capabilities. Lai met with visiting US lawmakers at the presidential office in Taipei on Thursday. The group included Republican Representative Mario Diaz-Balart and Democratic Representative Ami Bera, who are co-chairs of the US House of Representatives Taiwan Caucus. In their meeting, Lai again stressed that he plans to continue the policies of President Tsai Ing-wen. He said that under Tsai's leadership, Taiwan has responded calmly to Chinese military activities and made efforts to maintain the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. He added that, upon the foundation built by Tsai, he and vice president-elect Hsiao Bi-khim will bring together the Taiwanese people, build a resilient society, and uphold the peaceful and stable status quo of the Taiwan Strait. Lai said he hopes the two co-chairs and bipartisan friends in the US Congress will continue to support Taiwan in bolstering its self-defense capabilities. He also said he hopes they can work together in protecting peace, stability and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and in the region. Diaz-Balart told Lai that US support for Taiwan was firm, real, and "100 percent bipartisan." Bera said there should be no acts of aggression in the 21st century. He said Taiwan's future must be decided by its people.
