The incoming US national security advisor has suggested President-elect Donald Trump will maintain current trilateral frameworks such as Japan-US-South Korea and Japan-US-Philippines to counter China.

Mike Waltz, a member of the US House of Representatives, has been picked as Trump's national security advisor. He spoke at a Washington think tank on Tuesday.

Asked what elements of a bipartisan policy on China are most important, Waltz cited reinforcing partnerships and alliances.

He said he gives the administration of President Joe Biden credit for "the trilateral dialogue between South Korea, the United States and Japan, and the United States, Japan and the Philippines."

He said these dialogues helped those countries and governments "overcome historic animosities with a shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific." He added that he thinks all these things will continue.

The Biden administration took the initiative in these frameworks, mindful of China's increasingly hegemonic actions.

It has been unclear whether they would be maintained under Trump, who prefers one-on-one deals.

Waltz also pointed out that delivery of arms sold to Taiwan has been delayed. He said, "We need to work hard to free up and have them get what they paid for as a deterrent measure."
