Workers at a Volkswagen factory in the southern US state of Tennessee have voted to unionize and join the United Auto Workers. The UAW said on Friday that workers at the German auto factory are "the first Southern autoworkers outside of the Big Three to win their union." Seventy-three percent of the workers reportedly voted to unionize. The UAW has members under its wing at the Big Three carmakers, and negotiates with the management of General Motors, Ford Motor and Chrysler's parent company, Stellantis. Last autumn, the UAW won 25-percent pay raises over four and a half years after staging strikes at some of the three auto makers' plants. Observers say the successful unionization of a foreign-owned auto plant in the US may add further momentum to the UAW. Calls for unionization and pay hikes will likely grow at the US plants of Japanese carmakers, such as Toyota Motor and Honda Motor.
