Tens of thousands of people took to the streets across Israel on Saturday to oppose the new government's legal reforms that will allow the parliament to overturn the Supreme Court's decisions. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returned to power after one and a half years by forming a hardline coalition government with his right-wing Likud Party and far-right and religious parties late last year. The new government's move prompted a Supreme Court judge to issue a statement calling it an aberrant attack against the country's judiciary system. Protests were held across Israel on Saturday. Police say more than 80,000 people took part in a rally in the largest commercial city of Tel Aviv in central Israel. The new government is also said to have an extremely hardline stance towards Palestine. One Cabinet member was criticized by member states of the UN Security Council at an emergency meeting, for visiting a Muslim holy site in Jerusalem earlier this month. The new government's policies have led to repercussions at home and abroad just two weeks after it assumed power.
