UK conference focuses on supporting Ukraine's recovery NHK

Ukraine faces a long and difficult road to recovery from all the damage caused by Russia's invasion. That's the focus of a London gathering of officials from more than 60 countries, organizations and companies.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the meeting online. He said, " At this conference, we must move from reason to agreements and from agreements to real projects."

Participants at the two-day meeting are expected to discuss ways to help Ukraine utilize more clean energy and information technology. They'll talk about rebuilding education and medical systems. They'll also want to discuss how to ensure transparency on Ukraine's part.

The World Bank estimates Ukraine will need 411 billion dollars over the next 10 years to rebuild. The conference is encouraging the private sector to get involved.

Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa announced further aid in response to the devastation caused by the collapse of a massive dam in southern Ukraine. This includes about 160 water purifiers, 530 generators, and 30 pieces of construction machinery.

He said, " Japan intends to make use of its experience and knowledge it has accumulated in the field of recovery and reconstruction, and to vigorously implement uniquely Japanese form of reconstruction assistance in close contact with the Ukrainian people."

Hayashi said Japan's aid will focus on mine removal, clearing debris, supporting infrastructure, and the recovery of agriculture and industry.
