Japan, US IT firms to speed up trials of next-generation optical network NHK

Japanese telecom giant NTT and IT companies in the United States aim to speed up trials of next-generation optical networking technology with an aim for practical use by around 2030.

NTT has been developing the fast and large capacity next-generation network called IOWN, or Innovative Optical and Wireless Network.

About 400 people from Japanese electronics makers, American IT companies, universities and others that are jointly developing the technology attended a meeting in Osaka on Tuesday.

They plan to increase the capacity of data communication 125-fold compared with the 4G standard, while reducing power consumption to one percent by 2030.

Participants discussed speeding up trials through next year in so-called smart cities and the entertainment sector. They agreed that after the trials they will proceed with developing the technology for practical use.

An official of a major American IT firm, Accenture, said it is putting serious effort into developing the next-generation technology.

NTT Senior Executive Vice President Kawazoe Katsuhiko said the accumulation of collaborative efforts is important and that they had good in-person discussions on realizing the ideas.
