People in Nepal gathered on Friday to mark 10 years since a deadly earthquake struck the central part of country. The magnitude 7.8 quake on April 25, 2015, left an estimated 9,000 people dead. The jolt damaged about 900,000 buildings, accounting for 20 percent of all structures in the country. A memorial ceremony organized by the government took place on Friday near the capital Kathmandu. About 3,000 people, including military personnel and police officers involved in rescue operations, and bereaved families, observed a minute of silence. Participants laid flowers and offered prayers. A woman who lost two grandchildren in the disaster said she hopes such a tragedy never happens again. She added that Nepali people need to enhance preparedness for earthquakes. Reconstruction efforts are making progress, with many of the damaged structures rebuilt over the past decade. But in rural areas, there are many houses simply built with earthen walls and bricks, making it a challenge to improve quake resistance.
