Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met his counterpart on a two-day visit to Thailand to discuss regional issues. These included how ASEAN countries could address political turmoil in Myanmar two years after a coup there. Anwar, who took office last November, met Thailand's Prayut Chan-o-cha in the capital, Bangkok on Thursday. Their agenda included Myanmar's situation, as well as their own countries' border issues. Anwar told a joint press conference that constructive engagement with Myanmar's junta is important. ASEAN is asking the junta to implement the five-point consensus plan, which calls for an immediate halt to violence. Malaysia wants ASEAN to take a tough stance with the junta, while Thailand has a more conciliatory approach. The two leaders also discussed Muslim insurgents in southern Thailand near its border with Malaysia and agreed to cooperate on developing the border area. Anwar pledged to facilitate peace talks between the Thai government and the separatist group, and said Malaysia will do whatever it can to help find a peaceful solution.
