Pope Francis discharged from hospital, gives thanks to well-wishers NHK

Pope Francis has been discharged from the hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia for more than one month.

The Vatican made the announcement on Sunday.

The 88-year-old pontiff had been in the hospital in Rome since February 14.

He fell into a life-threatening condition twice during the period. But his condition has since improved.

Before leaving the hospital on Sunday, the Pope in a wheelchair waved to a crowd of well-wishers from a balcony.

He said, "Thank you, everyone" in a feeble voice, drawing loud applause.

He then returned to the Vatican in a car.

A woman visiting the hospital said the Pope's release from hospital is good news, awaited by everyone. She added that people prayed for him every day.

A man said it was nice to see the Pope with his own eyes as he had been worried about him.

His doctor said he has recovered from pneumonia, but he needs to continue to rest for at least two months.
