Former PM Abe's state funeral cost lower than previous estimate NHK

The Japanese government says the actual cost of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo's state funeral last month was over 1.2 billion yen, or more than 8 million dollars.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu said on Friday that the actual cost was about 400 million yen lower than the previous estimate of 1.66 billion yen.

Matsuno said the cost of welcoming foreign dignitaries was about 510 million yen, or about 3.5 million dollars, and the cost of deploying security personnel was 480 million yen, or about 3.3 million dollars.

He said about 240 million yen, or about 1.6 million dollars, had been spent on planning, production and renting the Nippon Budokan.

Matsuno said 4,170 people, including 730 from abroad, attended the funeral, and about 20,000 police officers were deployed on security duties.

He added that the government will consult 20 to 30 experts in wide-ranging fields to identify potential issues related to the funeral, and release the results as soon as possible.
