A Ukrainian Air Force officer has told NHK the country needs long-range missiles in order to save lives and destroy Russian territory and logistic hubs.
Yurii Ihnat spoke to NHK about the country's air defense capabilities in Kyiv earlier this month.
He said Ukraine does not have enough defense systems in border areas to destroy ballistic missiles from Russia.
He said Ukraine is instead using electromagnetic jamming to divert Russian missiles from their targets. But he said unfortunately the missiles still often hit cities, villages and residential areas.
Meanwhile, US newspaper Wall Street Journal reported that the number of Ukrainians and Russians killed or wounded since Russian invaded Ukraine had reached roughly one million.
It said that while determining the exact number has been difficult, a Ukrainian estimate from earlier this year puts the number of its dead at 80,000 and 400,000 wounded.
The newspaper said some western intelligence estimates of Russian casualties put the number of deaths at nearly 200,000 with around 400,000 wounded.
