Russian attacks on central, eastern Ukraine kill 10 NHK

The Russian military has launched attacks on central and eastern Ukraine, leaving 10 people dead and more than 20 others injured.

Ukraine's State Emergency Service says Russian forces struck the central city of Poltava with missiles and drones on Saturday. Officials say the attack damaged a residential building, killing nine and wounding 17 others, including four children.

The eastern city of Kharkiv also came under drone attack. The mayor said in a social media post that one woman died and four others were injured.

On the same day, Russia's defense ministry announced that its troops had captured another settlement in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk.

Ukraine's General Staff of the Armed Forces said Russia had fired a guided bomb that struck a school in Sudzha in the western Russian region of Kursk. The Ukrainian military has been launching a cross-border incursion there.

The school reportedly housed dozens of local residents preparing for evacuation. But it is not known whether there are any casualties.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Moscow in a social media post. He said, "This is how Russia wages war."

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government said Japan's National Security Advisor Okano Masataka and Ukraine's Presidential Office chief Andriy Yermak spoke by phone for the first time on Friday.

Yermak, who is said to be Zelenskyy's close aide, reportedly expressed gratitude for Tokyo's assistance and exchanged views with Okano on ways to deepen bilateral cooperation.
