Japan's meteorological authorities have lifted a tsunami advisory for all coastal areas. The advisory had been issued after a strong earthquake hit the Philippines' Mindanao Island on Saturday night. The Japan Meteorological Agency says the quake struck off Mindanao at around 10:30 p.m. local time. It registered a magnitude of 7.7. The agency issued a tsunami advisory for areas along Japan's Pacific coast, from the islands of the Yaeyama region in the far south, to Chiba Prefecture beneath Tokyo. A 40-centimeter tsunami was observed on Hachijojima Island, about 280 kilometers south of Tokyo, at around 4:30 a.m. Smaller waves were recorded in other areas. The agency is still calling for caution, as water levels may continue to fluctuate for some time. Authorities in The Philippines say a 64-centimeter tsunami and various smaller waves were observed at locations around northern and eastern Mindanao. Tremors with magnitudes of 5 to 6 are ongoing. Power has been knocked out, and some residents are reportedly staying in public evacuation centers. There have been no reports of injuries or major damage so far.
