In the women's soccer World Cup, Spain beat England 1-0 to win the championship for the first time. Spain's captain Olga Carmona scored the match-winning goal in the 29th minute of Sunday's final in Sydney. Japan's Miyazawa Hinata was the tournament's top scorer with five goals, becoming the second Japanese player to win the Golden Boot award. Japan was knocked out of the World Cup by Sweden in the quarterfinals. Sawa Homare was awarded the Golden Boot when the Japanese team won the Women's World Cup in Germany in 2011.
