Two weeks have passed since fighting between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces started in Sudan, with no end in sight for the conflict. The two sides agreed to extend a ceasefire for 72 hours from Friday midnight, but sounds of gunshots and shelling continued to be heard in the capital Khartoum and elsewhere on Saturday. Intermittent clashes were continuing despite the extended truce. Sudan's health authorities say 512 people have been killed since the violence erupted on April 15th. Clashes also occurred in the western state of Darfur, a stronghold of the RSF. The United Nations expects nearly 100,000 refugees will reach Sudan's western neighbor Chad in coming weeks. The World Food Programme is calling on the international community to provide emergency support to Chad, which is short of food for the refugees and money to buy it. It is feared that the humanitarian crisis will deepen in Sudan and its surrounding countries.
