Sled dogs race through snow in Hokkaido, northern Japan NHK

Dozens of dogs pulling sleds have raced through a snow-covered field in the city of Ishikari in Hokkaido, northern Japan.

People used their smartphones to film about 40 dogs dashing through the snow in Sunday's contest.

They shouted their names to encourage them.

When the dogs reached the finish line, the owners hugged their animals and patted them on the head.

One owner said his dog's condition was perfect and he did a very good job. He said he will give him a bowl of soup as a reward.

The first event of its kind in the city was organized by the Japan Federation of Sleddog Sports and a local tourism association in an effort to revitalize the region.

Federation chief Hayashi Satoko says sled dog racing is an attractive sport that displays speed and power. She says she is sure everyone will love it.
