Zelenskyy arrives in Washington to meet Trump, European leaders NHK

A: Hey there! Heard any news lately?
B: Not really, what's up?

A: Well, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in Washington meeting with Trump and European leaders about ending Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
B: Oh, really? When did this happen?

A: The talks are scheduled for early Monday afternoon. The White House said that the leaders of five European countries, including Britain, France, and Germany, will join too. They'll discuss security guarantees for Ukraine and setting territorial borders.
B: Wow, sounds important! What else?

A: The US special envoy mentioned they might offer NATO-like security guarantees for Ukraine, but Secretary of State Marco Rubio said more details need to be discussed first. He also said it won't be easy to agree on territories and where the lines will be drawn.
B: That sounds tough... But Zelenskyy seems hopeful that with America and Europe's help, they can force Russia into peace.

A: Yeah, in his social media post he said they all want to end this war quickly and make sure peace lasts. He added that Ukrainians are fighting for their land and independence, and Russia needs to stop the war it started.

B: And what about Putin's proposals? I heard something about them.
A: Oh yes! Western media reported on some ideas Putin presented during his summit with Trump. He suggested that Ukraine fully withdraw from eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions, in exchange for a promise to freeze the front lines in southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
B: That sounds complicated... But what else did he propose?
A: He also wanted formal recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, barred Ukraine from joining NATO, but allowed some kind of security guarantees. Plus, he demanded official status for the Russian language and freedom for the Russian Orthodox Church to operate in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in Washington for talks with US President Donald Trump and European leaders about ending Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The meeting follows the summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.

Zelenskyy said on social media on Sunday that he has already arrived in the US capital.

The White House says the Trump-Zelenskyy talks are scheduled to take place early Monday afternoon.

It says the leaders of five European countries, including Britain, France and Germany, will later join the talks, along with the leaders of the European Union and NATO.

The Ukrainian and European leaders are expected to seek Trump's understanding for Kyiv's position on the matter.

High on the agenda will be the security guarantees that Ukraine is asking for so the country will not be invaded again, as well as determining territorial borders.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff said the US and Europe could offer NATO-like security guarantees for Ukraine. He said Russia has agreed on this point.

But US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a TV interview on Sunday more detail must be discussed in the Monday talks. He said a concept is one thing and the reality is another.

He also said there needs to be an agreement on territories and where the lines are going to be drawn.
He said: "That's not going to be very easy. That's going to be tough."

Rubio said, "We have to make enough progress so that we can sit down, President Zelenskyy and President Putin in the same place" and reach a final agreement that ends the war.

In his social media post, Zelenskyy wrote: "We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably. And peace must be lasting."

He said, "Ukrainians are fighting for their land, for their independence."

He added: "Russia must end this war, which it itself started. And I hope that our joint strength with America, with our European friends, will force Russia into a real peace."

Western media report on proposals Putin made at summit with Trump

Western media are reporting on an outline of what Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to US President Donald Trump at their summit on Friday.

Reuters news agency on Sunday reported what multiple sources said they knew about Putin's proposals.

The sources were quoted as saying that "under the proposed Russian deal, Kyiv would fully withdraw from the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions in return for a Russian pledge to freeze the front lines in the southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia."

The sources also reportedly said that "Russia would be prepared to return comparatively small tracts of Ukrainian land it has occupied in the northern Sumy and northeastern Kharkiv regions."

Reuters went on to quote the sources as saying that "they knew Russia's leader was also seeking -- at the very least -- formal recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea," which Moscow unilaterally annexed in 2014.

According to the news agency, the sources also said that "Ukraine would be barred from joining the NATO military alliance, though Putin seemed to be open to Ukraine receiving some kind of security guarantees."

The sources reportedly said that "Russia would also demand official status for the Russian language inside parts of, or across, Ukraine, as well as the right of the Russian Orthodox Church to operate freely."
