Houthi officials killed in Israeli airstrike, Yemeni rebels say NHK

Anti-government Houthi rebels in Yemen say several of their senior officials, including the group's prime minister, were killed in an Israeli airstrike carried out on Thursday on Sanaa, the country's capital.

The Houthis, who effectively control Sanaa, made the announcement on Saturday.

In response to the assault, the rebels said they will continue to support and defend the people in the Gaza Strip, reiterating their pledged solidarity with Hamas. The Palestinian group has been fighting with Israel in the strip.

Reuters news agency reported that the slain officials were gathering for a televised speech recorded by the group's leader when they were targeted.

Houthi rebels have repeatedly launched missiles and drones toward Israel since it began its offensive in Gaza in October 2023. The group says it will take revenge for the killings of its officials, raising concerns that the two sides may intensify their responses to attacks in the future.
