The leader of an atomic bomb survivors' group says he is disappointed with the outcome of the G7 summit in Hiroshima. Tanaka Terumi, co-chairperson of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations, or Nihon Hidankyo, held an online news conference after the summit closed on Sunday. He said he is "disappointed" the G7 leaders maintained their stance of relying on nuclear deterrence and placing importance on the nuclear non-proliferation framework. Tanaka said a-bomb survivors have been calling for abolishing nuclear weapons as soon as possible as they believe such weapons and human beings cannot co-exist, and were hoping to see the G7 summit make progress toward that goal. He said a-bomb survivors would have liked to see what efforts the participating countries that possess nuclear weapons will make toward abolishing them. Referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Hiroshima, Tanaka said "although Ukraine is being invaded by Russia, there may be more negatives about having only one side attend the meeting under the current circumstance."
