FBI searches home, office of former Trump security adviser John Bolton NHK

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has searched the home and office of John Bolton, a former national security adviser who served in US President Donald Trump's first administration. Bolton has been an outspoken critic of the president.

The FBI said on Friday that it is "conducting court authorized activity in the area."

Investigators were seen entering and leaving Bolton's home near the US capital.

The searches were reportedly conducted as part of an investigation into the potential mishandling of classified information.

Bolton stepped down as national security adviser in 2019 following a split with Trump over policies such as the US approach to North Korea.

Bolton wrote a memoir about his tenure that included criticisms of the president. He recently expressed a skeptical view about Trump's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump told reporters that he doesn't know about the searches. He said, "I saw it on television this morning."

Trump also said that Bolton "could be a very unpatriotic guy." He added, "We're going to find out."

Some media outlets say the searches are likely to raise concerns that the Trump administration is using its law enforcement powers to target a political foe.
